Catching Fire: Shifting Ikat in the Warp and Weft with Beth Ross Johnson, weeklong workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School where we learned about Japanese and Majorcan ikat weaving traditions, how to skein warps and wefts in the proper lengths to wrap plastic raffia around to create a resist for the dyeing process, which then creates various patterns and images when woven. 10/13/24-

Playtime with Inlaid Jewelry with T. Breeze Verdant, weeklong workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School where we learned basic inlay techniques including embedding copper, brass, and silver wire, basic mother of pearl inlays, and cutting channels with fine puzzle blades on the scrollsaw to inlay recycled tin cans to create beautiful pendants, earrings, and an inlaid brush. 10/7/24-10/12/24

From Tree to Treasure (Woodturning) with Sammy Long, weeklong workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School. Turned green wood from the log to create a variety of bowls, including a bark-edge bowl, while discussing things like proper posture, sharpening techniques, and how to mount the bowl to get specific grain patterns. 9/29/24-10/4/24

Mixed Metal Magic with Una Barrett, weeklong workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School. Explored copper, silver, and jewelers brass in sheet and wire form, learning how to shape, stamp, anneal, use a jeweler’s saw, silver solder, multiple approaches to prong setting, creating chain, and creating findings. 9/22/24 - 9/28/24

For the Love of All Bandsaw Boxes with Scarlette Rouse and Elizabeth Weber, weeklong workshop where we explore non-traditional bandsaw boxes focusing on the woodworking and surface design equally in the class. We learned how to take apart and replace a bandsaw blade properly, how to cut various basic boxes including one shaped like a book, and explored surface embellishment with rotary tools and burrs, woodburners, paints, burning, and more. 9/15/24 - 9/21/24

Exploring the World of Brooms with Mark Hendry, weeklong workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School where we learned the basics of sorting and grading craft broomcorn, the anatomy of broomcorn, how to properly soak and mellow broomcorn in an anti-fungal solution, and how to build incredibly sturdy and beautiful Appalachian style brooms that will last decades. 9/8/24-9/13/24

Let Forging Open The Door (Long Weekend) with Addison De Lisle, 4-day workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School exploring forged key basics including forge welding the bow, shaping the stem with the help of spring tools, forging the bit, and securing it to the stem using silver solder. 8/30/24-9/2/24

Wet Plate Collodion with David Emmitt Adams, 2-week session at Penland School of Craft. Learned how to use a large format camera and wet plate technique on both aluminum and glass plates, in the studio and outside with a portable darkroom 7/28/24-8/9/24

Workstudies, Internships, Residencies & Scholarships

Student Host at John C. Campbell Folk School, 4-month assignment where I and a co-host alternate weeks carrying the host phone and being on call when staff is off campus, along with other responsibilities including but not limited to orchestrating family-style lunch and dinner in the dining hall, moving chairs at various times during the day to accommodate events in the Community Room, checking on the coffee station in the morning and breaking it down at the end of the day, opening and closing the History Center, being a keyholder, and more, while simultaneously taking primarily week-long classes when classes are in session 8/27/24 - 12/14/24

Pines Scholar at Penland School of Craft, 2 weeks working in the dining hall during Summer Session 5, 2 weeks in class for Summer Session 6. This was a full-time position for the two weeks helping complete all tasks cleaning up from meals in the dining hall for all meals, as well as helping with changeover both upon arriving for Session 5 and for Session 6 - 6/15/24-7/9/24
